New research indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
