The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
